Today, March 1st, is the 140th birthday of Yellowstone National Park. To celebrate, Beer Bloggers Conference organizer Zephyr Adventures has partnered with the Montana Office of Tourism, distributor World Class Beer, All About Beer magazine, and Pintley.com to give away one free tour including airfare to its July 20-25 Yellowstone & Grand Tetons Beer Adventure. See below for details on how to enter.
In 1871, army explorer Ferdinand Hayden was sent to find the headwaters of the Yellowstone river and survey the region. Upon his return to the East, he mounted a campaign to promote, but also to protect, the natural wonders he had seen. Perhaps most convincing were the colors in expedition member and artist Thomas Moran’s illustrations (including the depiction above). This campaign eventually resulted in a decision by Congress on March 1, 1872, to pass into law the act creating Yellowstone as “a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.”
This was the world’s first national park, which some call “America’s best idea”.
Today 3.5 million people per year visit Yellowstone National Park. However, only about a dozen or so visit on an active beer tour! On Zephyr’s Yellowstone & Grand Teton Beer Adventure participants hike, bike, or river raft each morning, including a hike along the edge of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone you see in the painting above.
Participants also visit six breweries in six days, meeting brewmasters, doing blind tastings, and enjoying beer pairing dinners. Breweries include:
- Bozeman Brewing Company in Bozeman, Montana
- Lone Peak Brewery in Big Sky, Montana
- Grand Teton Brewing in Victor, Idaho
- Thai Me Up Brewing in Jackson, Wyoming
- Snake River Brewing in Jackson, Wyoming
- Red Lodge Ales in Red Lodge, Montana
