A Note from 2015 European Beer Bloggers & Writers Conference Partner, visit.brussels
A warm welcome from one of our regional hosts in Belgium!
Belgium is a unique country of beer because of the sheer diversity of beer styles you can find here: Trappist beers, abbey beers, white wheat-based beers, fruit beers, amber-coloured beers, pils and many more. Despite the disappearance of many breweries, Belgium is still renowned for its know-how. Today, we’re seeing a growing interest in speciality beers and all things natural and traditional. The start-up and success of lots of new small-scale artisanal breweries during the past few years is illustrating this growing revival
Experiencing beer is not limited to just drinking beer, it is an important part of our heritage. The rich Belgian beer heritage is still present in Brussels thanks to the numerous cafés where you can taste a wide range of beers including traditional Kriek and Geuze, the typical beers of Brussels and surroundings. There’s nothing like enjoying a beer on a terrace or in the warm setting of a brasserie. Beer is undeniably part of our gastronomic tradition: it is important to take time to savour the complexity of flavours and tasting new combinations within the Belgian cuisine.
For every beer lover the highlight of the year is the Belgian Beer Weekend that takes place during the first weekend of September in the unique setting of the Grand Place (this year 4, 5 and 6 September). By the end of 2018 the nearby Stock Exchange building will be transformed into the “Belgian Beer Palace”: a new cultural and tourist attraction expecting to welcome more than 300 000 visitors annually. It will present an interactive exhibition on the Belgian beer culture and brewing tradition and much more. This experience centre will be at the same time an introduction to the diversity of Belgian beer and also an opportunity to discover much more in Brussels and throughout Belgium.
