I would have laughed out loud if you would have told me a couple of years ago that very shortly I would be making money by living out my passion.
A successful career in marketing seemed ideal. Each year that passed added up to just another year of work. I have always envied the famous Confucius quote, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Though it seemed a bit far fetched to me because I wondered what job does one really enjoy? The key is to take the focus off of the negative word job and rephrase it a bit. So here is my remake of the quote:
“Choose a passion, combine it with a skill and you will have
a job that never requires a day of work.”
-Mandy Carter
A study from the Deloitte University Press reported that up to 87.7 percent of America’s workforce is not able to contribute to their full potential because they don’t have passion for their work.
Now before you quit your job to focus on your hobby there are a few things to figure out first. It is very possible to live with a strong sense of fulfillment that also provides a financial reward. But it does not happen by merely engaging in your passion, it requires planning, time and commitment to the success.
There are a few things you need to understand to help increase your chances of creating a road where your passion and profit will collide:
- Recognize that having passion is not all it takes.
- You need to be or become qualified in chosen field of passion.
- Expect road bumps and be flexible with the journey.
- There will be naysayers and that is okay; keep moving forward.
- Looking at the odds of turning your hobby into a career will not be helpful.
- Understand the you WILL work, it will just be an undeniably pleasant way to work.
If you are anything like me, the desire of doing what you feel you are meant to do catches up to you more often than not. And if you choose to following that longing in an intentional way, then success can follow.
Having a career built around your passion and skills can bring success far beyond what you think is possible. I assume that many people would love to turn their passion into a profit. Sharing practical goals and strategies will be the focus of my discussion at BBC17. I will help carve out a plan for the attendees to take their passion for beer blogging and turn it into a full time career!
BBC17 will be rich with exceptional content this year. Make sure to review the full agenda and get registered for an informational and fun conference!
